Supplemental Security Income is one of the components making up the vast United States social safety net and was overseen by the Social Security Administration.
It was designed to be a cash grant program to assist people with low income and very limited resources. Main beneficiaries include: individuals who are disabled, blind, or aged 65 and older.
As of July 2024, the newest data from officials, about 7.4 million people receive SSI benefits, with an average monthly payment of about $696.
It is also a program on which many depend for major or sole sources of income to meet their basic needs.
However, if you’re one of those beneficiaries, you may have noticed that this month the check didn’t come on the same date of the month. So, what exactly happened?
In September 2024, why was there no Social Security payment?
For a quirk in the Social Security Administration calendar, no SSI payment was made in September 2024. Ordinarily, SSI payments go out on the first day of each month.
When that day falls on a weekend or holiday – as it did this September – the payment is shifted to the previous business day closest to it.
In this instance, Sunday fell on September 1, 2024. Thus, the clearances were reflected on Friday, August 30.
This means that although there was not actually a payment in September, the beneficiaries had by the end of August already received their funds.
Nothing less in value is necessary to realize was received, but rather it became subject to an earlier deposit date.
Other months impacted by calendar changes
Adjustments like this do not happen in September alone. In fact, similar types of scheduling shifts occur at other junctures within the year when weekends or holidays interfere with the conventional payment schedule.
One upcoming example will come in December 2024. Just as in September, December 1 falls on a Sunday, so SSI payments will be issued on Friday, November 29.
Also, New Year’s Day in 2025 falls on a holiday, so the January payments will be one day in advance. They will be issued on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
If you receive SSI, you should be aware of these calendar changes to avoid confusion of when it might arrive.
Social Security payment schedule for September
Although the calendar indicates that SSI participants received their benefits in September, this was not a problem for all Social Security claimants.
In fact, according on your birthdate and the kind of benefit you receive, your payment dates may differ significantly. This is the breakdown of the Social Security pay schedule for September 2024:
Recipients determined by the day of birth
If your birthday falls on September 1st through September 10th, your money was received on September 11th.
Your cheque arrived on September 18 if your birthday is between September 11 and September 20.
You received your payout on September 25 if your birthday is between September 21 and September 31.
Update on the SSI application process
Along with the changes in the schedule of payment, serious upgrades are being given by the Social Security Administration to the process for SSI application.
In an effort to make the process easier and smoother, they announced that as early as December of 2024, some applicants will be given access to an improved online application system.
The new system, called “iClaim expansion,” will accelerate a process that has often been complained about as long and cumbersome.
In the first stage, the update will be offered to single, never-married people between ages 18 and 65 who are applying concurrently for Social Security and SSI benefits. The hope is eventually to be able to use the system with all applicants.
Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley drove home the significance of the improvement when he declared, “People who depend on this vital safety net deserve a process that is smoother and less complicated than what we currently have.
We are committed to making this vision a reality in the coming years.”.
